I suppose the idea is to be able to hide the group sums, similar to hiding the handles?

This would still be valid for GTK. How about extending the NDS concept for this? I.e. make the tag shown inside the closed-group polygon configurable?

Polygon shading already works with GTK.

Yes. But I dont like where the 'hide handles' option is placed, so i wouldn't reproduce that for the group sums. Better to configure it independent from printing, like your suggestion:
